100 + Year Old Came Window Restoration 2016

Brenda & her husband who live in Central Alberta, brought us this 100+ year old came window which is a family heirloom that they rescued from a century old family farm home.

This is what the window looked like when it was brought to our studio.

The following picture shows the window after it was cleaned and before removal from the the wooden frame. Unfortunately there were 3 broken pieces in the rose colored border,  4 greens in the center were all cracked and or broken along with one center clear.

In the next photo the came window has been removed from the old wooden frame.

In the next photo the numbered pieces # 2 top left – 4 top left center- 15 bottom right center (rose border pieces) 26 (clear center piece)  28 – 29 – 45 – 47 (the 4 center greens) were all broken.  The best alternative we could come up for the dusty rose border glass was an English Muffle Dusty Rose #4902. Our friends at Rubaiyat Stained Glass Studio in Calgary helped us to locate an older piece of clear as well as a very close matching green.

We take lots of photographs of these old windows before taking them apart, as well we number each piece. We set up a frame then start in one corner and work our way across the window, cleaning each piece of glass as we go along (we also re-number after clean each piece to ensure that it is put back in the window in the exact manner that the original stained glass artist installed them. Having good photographs certainly helps as we can bring them up on our computer to ensure that we have replaced each piece as it was originally placed in the window.

What we did was replace the 4 corners with the new English Muffle #4902, then carefully working with 2 of these unbroken border pieces we used them to replace broken border pieces # 4 & 15. The 4 green pieces in the center were also replaced and the 4 center clears were all replace to even out the look of the panel.

Our clients were most appreciated of our work in restoring their family heirloom panel. They have now found an old photograph of the 100+ year old farm home and it shows 2 of these windows. They plan on residing it and there is a possibility that the 2nd window could still hidden away behind the siding. If so and they find the 2nd window there is a very good chance that it might be there in its original state with no broken glass, but no doubt will need to also be fully restored.

Alberta Prairie – Mountains Transom Window 2015

As previously indicated we have an updated photo of the interior transom window featuring the Alberta Prairie – Mountains and Storm Clouds.  For the sunbeam rays as mentioned further in this post we used a Crystal Ice Youghiogheny glass. Depending on the time of day whether it be sunlight or interior room back lighting these rays come to life.

Wonderful clients who live SW of Olds Alberta also commissioned us to do their last interior transom window. The first 2 are on our website as Alberta Rose Transom Window Summer of 2014 and Beveled Transom Window 2015.

For the 3rd window our clients wanted to have the transom window designed from a painting that they have, which shows storm clouds over the prairies with the grain fields in the foreground, backdropped by Alberta’s majestic Rocky Mountains.

To accomplish this design we once again solicited the awesome design skills of Martha at Paned Expressions Studios in Edgewood Maryland. The design measures approximately 36 inches wide by 12 inches high.

What was really neat about this project was the opportunity to use some very neat art glass from Youghiogheny, Armstrong, Kokomo and Spectrum Glass. With this design it was of utmost importance for us is to watch glass direction carefully as advised by Martha at Paned Expressions Studios as it could have turned out looking like a bad abstract.

This picture is of the finished window prior to installation in our clients home. The sunbeam rays were made using Youghiogheny #YO-1000SP Ice White. The light effects from either backlight from sunlight and/or room lighting is quite simply stunning. The next time we visit our clients we will get a photo of the window installed, hopefully showing the sunbeam light effects.StainedGlassTransomWindowJune2015

BC Alberta Guide Dogs Fundraiser Calgary April 30 2016

Earlier this year we were asked if we would make a donation to the BC & Alberta Guide Dogs in support of their 1st Annual Calgary Trivia Night fundraiser which raises funds for the development of guide dogs for kids and others with Autism, as well as seeing eye dogs for Blind people.

We made this stained glass dog from a free Spectrum Glass pattern which was used as a silent auction fund raising item. It measured approximately 8 inches wide by 11 inches high. We used Wissmach 145SP glass for the majority of the dog.

The 1st Annual Calgary Trivia Night Fundraiser was most successful.

Lamb – Baby Shower Gift Spring 2016

We needed a Baby Shower Gift this Spring and we decided to make this Baby Lamb, it measured approximately 6 x 6 inches. The pink flower was a stick on added to the finished product. We solder fine silver chain into the back solder seams for hanging.
