Kaui Hawaii Beach Wedding Present 2024

An awesome couple who are good friends were married in late 2023. When he proposed to his future wife it was on a beach on the island of Kaui Hawaii. As a wedding present for them we designed this circular panel measuring 16 inches in diameter from Kaui beach pictures and also utilized some ideas and features of a Kee Beach panel we made many years ago.

The photo below shows the construction of the wedding panel – we were fortunate to have some very neat art glass on hand to complete this panel which included some Youghiogheny and Bullseye.

“Hare House” Panel 2021

Our clients had recently purchased a 100+ year old home in Red Deer. The previous owner advised them that this home was called the “Hare House” and they left behind this old painting on a piece of wood titled “Hare House”

Our clients wanted this painting of the “Hare House” turned into a stained glass panel. The painting measured approximately 18 inches wide x 23 inches high.

Once again we enlisted the stained glass design skills of Martha Hanson at Paned Expressions Studios in Edgewood Maryland USA to design the stained glass panel from the “Hare House” painting.

We had an old piece of Bullseye #2105 for the evening sky and were able to match it across the panel. For the moon and border we located a quite old piece of Armstrong Glass. The upper leaves were made from Bullseye # 3212-30. The purple flowers on the left were from an old piece of Bullseye.

The hare was made from Oceanside/Spectrum Hawkwings and Youghiogheny 1313HS. The picket fence was constructed using English Muffle #4925 and the lettering from Black Waterglass.

The following photo is the painting, that was done many years ago by an unknown artist.

The next photo shows the pattern laid out with the border being made.

The next photo shows the panel already for soldering, after which we cleaned with Kwik Clean, used steel wool # 0000 to clean the solder lines and then applied Jax Black Pewter patina, cleaned again with Kwik Clean. Then the 1/2 inch zinc border came was attached with all panel joints soldered to the frame on both the front and back of the panel. Finally Clarity fine stained glass polish was applied to finish the panel.

The next photo is a close up of the Hare, although they don’t show up very well in a photo, for the 2 dots in the Hare’s eyes we used a white nail polish.

The last photo shows the bottom pieces being fitted and foiled.

Door & Transom Windows 2021

A few years ago our clients lived in Southern Alberta and were selling their home, with the intent to build a new craftsman style home west of Rocky Mtn. House. They had designed the sidelight and door panels and commissioned us to build them which they would eventually install in their new handmade front door.

Unfortunately due to the effects of the virus COVID-19, substantial time delays were encountered and it took approximately 3 years for this commission to be completed and to be finally installed in their new home front door.

The five panels were constructed using zinc H round came edged with a flat Zinc border came. The glass used varied from English Muffle’s, Oceanside/Spectrum’s, Kokomo’s along with strategically placed 1 inch square bevels.

The first picture shows this very beautiful handmade door from inside their home.

The second picture below shows the panels with daylight coming through them.

The last photo is the outside view of this very elegant front door.

Celtic Cross and Thistle 2021

We were asked by a friend who belongs to The Order of The Eastern Star, to make this Celtic Cross as a gift for the incoming Worthy Grand Matron. It measured approximately 7 inches wide by 10.5 inches high and was symbolic of the WGM’s emblems.  We use black cathedral glass with clear granite for the Celtic knots.

Alberta Welcome – Red Deer Alberta – The Gaetz Memorial United Church

In the late fall of 2014, we were asked to see what we could do for a large church window for “The Gaetz Memorial United Church” in downtown Red Deer Alberta. The church recently installed new main entrance doors, with 2 large windows above these doors.

The church committee provided us with sketch design concept. We once again enlisted the stained glass design experts at Paned Expressions Studios Inc. in Edgewood Maryland USA ( http://www.panedexpressions.com ). Martha Hanson and her design team came up with the “Alberta Welcome” design. These 2 panels each measured approximately 6 feet wide by slightly over 2 feet high for a total of some 25+ sq ft of stained glass and contain nearly 600 pieces of glass.

In the construction of these windows we used a variety of beautiful art glass including Armstrong, Bullseye, Kokomo, Spectrum, Uroboros, Wissmach and Youghiogheny

The windows were a memorial gift from one of the congregation members.

This is the left panel of “Alberta Welcome”. The concept was to show a sweeping design across Alberta and as the windows faced south it was perfect to do this. On the left side of the left panel are located the Cypress Hills of South Eastern Alberta along with a lake in that area, our famous Alberta Roses, and the badlands near the Drumheller area. A road  was designed to run up to a church located within the rolling fields of wheat and canola. The blue piece can be visioned as either a flax field or one of many sloughs located in this area.

The unfortunate part is that we are unable to get a full photograph of both windows together. The reason being that there is a staircase descending  to the front doors on the left side with a wall on the right side, then another set of stairs descending to the church basement.

Design by Paned Expressions Studios

The right panel picture had to be taken from the descending stairs into the church basement which distorts the view somewhat. The 2 panels were designed to flow together therefore some of the crop land and parkland continued into the slopes of forest and foothills rising to the mountains. The mountain is Mt. Rundle located in Banff National Park with its reflection in Vermillion lakes and is a world famous sight to see in our Rocky Mountains west of Calgary, Alberta.

To give you an idea as to the scope of this stained glass window here is a picture of them together as they are above the doors of the church, however as stated above not a true indication as to how they look.

If you are ever in Red Deer a visit to the church would be very worthwhile, not only to see “Alberta Welcome” but the church sanctuary which has some of the largest and most beautiful old stained glass windows in Central Alberta.

We are grateful for the opportunity to do this window for the Gaetz Memorial United Church located at 4758 Ross Street in downtown Red Deer.

This “Alberta Welcome” would not have been possible with the outstanding help and design talents of Martha Hanson and her team at Paned Expressions Studios Inc.
