Black Lab – BC & Alberta Guide Dogs Fundraiser

For their 2nd Annual BC & Alberta Guide Dogs Trivia Night Fundraiser event which was held on April 29th, 2017 in Calgary, we made this Black Lab. We used Armstrong Glass # AG – 1825S an Opal Black/Streaky which allows light to filter through this glass (most black glass allow no light penetration).

The dog measures approximately 8 inches wide by 11 inches high.

Once again the fundraiser was very successful to raise funds for the development of dogs to help kids with autism, seeing eye dogs for the blind etc.  They are always looking for donations. One can also become a puppy sponsor by accessing their website.

Canada Geese Circle 2007

We were looking through our 1,000’s of older photos and came across this pair of Canada Geese in a circle pattern. Unfortunately this is the only photograph of the piece that we have. If memory serves us correctly the diameter of the piece was approximately 10 – 12 inches. With the return of spring, lots of Canada Geese make Alberta their home to raise their families in our lakes and sloughs.

Alberta Rose Transom Interior Window 2017

Once again we were given the opportunity to make an Alberta Rose interior transom window for a new duplex in Olds Alberta. The window measured 36 inches wide x 12 inches high. For the border we used Spectrum’s 6022.82CC Congo Pearl Opal and in the centre we were fortunate to obtain a full sheet of Spectrum’s 100B Clear Barnwood which we matched across the window.

We previously made a similar Alberta Rose window using different glass which we featured on our website a few years ago for the same clients farm home SW of Olds, Alberta. (see link below)

The first photo shows the completed window prior to installation in our clients new duplex.

The next photo shows the transom window installed above the bedroom door way.

We use the Morton Layout Block system when building windows to ensure a precise fit. This photo shows the layout blocks holding in place the 3/8 zinc came border, with the border glass fitted along with the Alberta Roses foiled and burnished.

It is somewhat time consuming to fit and match the Barnwood glass, as all of the patterns are traced using white freezer paper that we obtain from Safeway, then glued on the smooth reversed side of the barnwood. There were five separate pattern pieces for each panel. We started on the left side and did each section ensuring that we cut and continued to match the barnwood glass across the whole window. The best advice we can offer anyone doing this is to take your time, measure and check numerous times before glueing your pattern to the glass and then scoring, breaking, grinding, fitting and foiling each piece. On each of the 3 panels we started at the bottom and worked our way to the top.

When making a window like this using clear glass, where the solder lines will have black patina applied it is imperative that black backed foil be used. For cleaning we use Kwik Clean after soldering, again after the patina is applied and then apply Clarity Stained Glass polish, using soft cloths and toothbrushes to clean and polish the panel.

Celebrating Canada 1867 – 2017

On July 1st 2017 Canada will be celebrating it’s 150th birthday. We have taken our boxed Maple Leaf design which we increased in size along with the changing the box insert to reflect Canada’s 150th birthday.

We use a very pretty Uroboros Glass  #00-621 – Red Orange with Yellow.

Eagles – January 2017

Our Central Alberta clients who originally commissioned these right & left facing eagles, intended on hanging them in their West Country retreat towards the Rocky Mountains of Alberta.

However for now decided to hang them on their living room wall facing each other.

These eagles measured 20 x 20 inches and were designed in stained glass by Paned Expression Studios of Edgewood Maryland USA from an intarsia pattern designed by our clients.

One normally sees stained glass hanging windows, however our clients decided to hang them on their cedar lined living room walls which created a stunning effect.

The first photo is of the left facing eagle, followed by the right facing eagle and the last photo showing them both in our client’s living room.
